About Us

This is my beautiful family: My children and I, 2007
Left to right, a very happy me, my oldest daughter, Dionna; my youngest daughter, Brhiannon; and my son, Sean.

I’m Demian Elaine’ Yumei, DreamSinger, a singer/songwriter, author and activist.

My most radical activism is homeschooling my daughter.

I did not always see it this way, but time and growing older, has mellowed me out and given me new perspective.

I’m an older mom, having my first child when I turned 27, and now raising another minor child in my 50’s. I home schooled my first two for periods of time throughout their elementary and middle school years. My son attended high school all four years. My oldest had attended two, before deciding she preferred home school.

Twelve years after my son was born, I became a “brand new” mom again. In many ways, my youngest who is now ten, is benefiting from the experience learned from my first two, and perhaps, my grandson and soon-to-be-here granddaughter are and will be reaping the benefits of even more years.

This is the beautiful grandson Dionna blessed me with:

This blog is a joint effort by my youngest daughter and myself. Brhiannon and I will be sharing our thoughts with you as we explore the various paths called “homeschooling”. As creative as she is, Brhiannon will be putting up photos of her artwork and sharing her perspective as a home schooled kid.

Brhiannon is a very bright and precocious right brain child, which means she doesn’t fit in any one-size-fits-all curriculum, but soars when given the space and opportunity to do so - in her own time.

I love books, researching curriculum and trying new things out, so I’ll be sharing my opinion and personal experiences with the various resources we use. Brhiannon, will also, share her point of view.

I’m, also, a single parent, and Brhiannon, for all practical purposes, an only child, as her two older siblings are in their 20’s and have long been on their own. This creates its own unique dynamics and challenges, but also offers blessings unique to those very same dynamics. We will explore both here.

As inferred in the title of this blog, I am an “inclusive home schooler”. As I home school, my philosophy becomes less and less school and more and more adventure, of meeting every child’s, every person’s natural and insatiable appetite to learn, when left unfettered and unbound. My educational values include not only the academics but a world view that fosters respect for different viewpoints and cultures.

Every person is my teacher, perhaps the most important one, being my child.

*A note: My middle name and the middle name of both my daughters…and soon to be born granddaughter is Yumei, after my mother, Miyasan Yumei. (If the name wasn’t specifically a girl’s first name, I would have passed it on to my son, as well.)

It has several meanings, but my favorite is that it is the name of a special plum flower that blooms in the mountains of China only in the winter. It’s a frail white blossom whose beautiful fragrance reveals the flowers presence before the sight of it.

I like the idea of blooming in the winter. It appeals to the survivor in me…and inspires.

Thank you for joining us on this journey!
